THE HISTORY OF GOTHIC LITERATURE AND GOTHIC ELEMENTS IN CHARLES DICKENS’ WORKS

Abstract

This article explores the historical development of Gothic literature and investigates the incorporation of Gothic elements in the works of Charles Dickens. While Gothic literature emerged in the late 18th century, its influence extended well into the Victorian period, evolving with changing societal concerns. Dickens, though not primarily a Gothic writer, skillfully integrated Gothic tropes such as haunted spaces, psychological horror, and social decay into his narratives to critique Victorian society and deepen character complexity. By examining selected texts, including Bleak House and Great Expectations, this study highlights Dickens’ unique contribution to the Gothic tradition.
