THE ROLE OF PHONETICS IN LANGUAGE TEACHING

Abstract

This article explores the critical role of phonetics in the process of foreign language learning and teaching. It examines the cognitive and communicative benefits of systematic phonetic instruction, including improved pronunciation, listening comprehension, and reduced language interference. Various effective methods for teaching phonetics are analyzed, such as the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), minimal pairs, tongue twisters, shadowing, and modern technologies. The main challenges faced by teachers in integrating phonetics into the curriculum are also discussed, including insufficient teacher training and time constraints. In conclusion, the necessity of systematic and integrated phonetic training is emphasized for achieving a high level of language proficiency and effective intercultural communication.
