HOW TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ FOCUS AND WORD RETENTION IN CLASS

Abstract

This article explores practical methods for improving students’ concentration and vocabulary retention during English lessons. In many language classrooms, students quickly lose focus and often forget newly learned words after a short period of time. Such problems are usually connected with low motivation, passive learning environments, and overreliance on traditional memorization techniques. For this reason, the study pays special attention to interactive and communicative teaching approaches that help learners stay active and remember vocabulary more effectively.

The research was carried out during teaching practice at Pop District Polytechnic College No.1 in Namangan region. Classroom observations, questionnaires, vocabulary tasks, and practical teaching activities were used to collect data. During the lessons, several methods including visual materials, repetition exercises, games, pair work, and collaborative activities were tested with students in order to examine their influence on attention and word retention.

The findings showed that students became more focused and participated more actively when lessons included interactive and communication-based activities. Vocabulary recall also improved noticeably when learners practiced new words repeatedly through discussions, games, and contextual tasks rather than memorizing them mechanically. In addition, a positive classroom atmosphere and supportive teacher-student interaction helped reduce distraction and increased learners’ motivation during lessons.
