Abstract

This study examines language classification as a fundamental concept in linguistics and its role in understanding linguistic diversity. The research applies a qualitative descriptive approach to analyze theoretical linguistic sources devoted to genetic, typological, and areal classification of languages. The results demonstrate that language classification enables students and researchers to identify historical relationships between languages, compare their structural characteristics, and understand the influence of geographical and sociocultural factors on language development. It is revealed that the study of language classification supports analytical thinking, systematic reasoning, and comparative skills by encouraging learners to move beyond surface-level observation. The study concludes that language classification is not only a theoretical framework but also an important educational tool that contributes to linguistic awareness and a deeper understanding of language as a dynamic and socially embedded system.
