THE ROLE OF MOTIVATION IN LANGUAGE LEARNING. INVESTIGATING FACTORS THAT MOTIVATE STUDENTS TO LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE.

The article explores the role of motivation in learning English as a foreign language among university students in . It aims to identify the main factors that influence students’ motivation and determine how these factors contribute to successful language learning. The article employed an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design that combined quantitative and qualitative approaches. A total of 2,077 students and 109 English language instructors participated in surveys, followed by interviews, focus group discussions, and classroom observations. This combination of methods provided both a broad overview and a deeper understanding of students’ motivational experiences.
The results revealed that students were highly motivated to learn English because it is recognized as the global language of communication, offering academic, professional, and personal benefits. Quantitative data showed strong instrumental and integrative motivation, while qualitative findings highlighted personal ambitions, family encouragement, teaching methods, and interactive learning environments as key influences. Observations confirmed that motivated students actively participated in class and demonstrated persistence and confidence in using English. Overall, the study provided clear insights into the connection between motivation, learning behavior, and successful foreign language acquisition in higher education context.
