THE ROLE OF TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING IN LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING

Abstract

This paper explores the pedagogical role of translation and interpreting in second language (L2) learning and teaching, with a focus on English as a foreign language. Drawing upon findings from previous studies and classroom-based research, the study investigates how translation and interpreting contribute to learners’ linguistic, communicative, and intercultural development. A qualitative approach was adopted, involving semi-structured interviews with 20 university students and an analysis of advanced English courses integrating translation activities. The findings indicate that students improved their L2 accuracy, writing proficiency, and reading comprehension through translation, while interpreting enhanced their oral fluency, listening comprehension, and real-time processing. Translation was found to serve as a pedagogical tool that promotes critical thinking, bilingual awareness, and reflective learning. The study concludes that purposeful use of translation and interpreting in language classrooms can make language learning more effective, interactive, and culturally enriched.
