Abstract

This article explores the potential of the mobile application iTerms to improve lexical competency among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Drawing on current research on mobile-assisted vocabulary learning (MAVL), the study examines the theoretical underpinnings of lexical competence, the design features of iTerms, and how its integration into language learning environments might enhance receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge. The article uses a mixed-methods orientation, synthesising literature findings on mobile vocabulary apps, followed by a proposed implementation in a university EFL context and discussion of results, limitations and implications. Findings suggest that structured, repetitive, scaffolded activities within iTerms — especially with spaced-repetition, multimedia input, immediate feedback and learner autonomy — can foster measurable gains in vocabulary retention, learner motivation, and use of new lexical items. Key challenges include ensuring pedagogical alignment, managing cognitive load, and sustaining long-term engagement. The paper concludes with recommendations for practitioners and suggestions for future empirical research.
